🔧 Sometimes, a future in the trades starts with something as simple as solving a pipe puzzle. At the Newcomer Centre's Multicultural Festival, Women Building Futures had the opportunity to connect with newcomer women and introduce them to careers in the skilled trades. Throughout the day, participants challenged themselves with our hands-on pipe puzzle activity, and something remarkable happened. Many women initially doubted their ability to complete the challenge. But after successfully solving it, often in under two minutes, they discovered strengths and skills they didn't know they had. For many, it was the first time they saw themselves in the trades. We're grateful to the Newcomer Centre and the I-WIN Initiative for partnering with us to help more women explore what's possible. 📅 Interested in learning more? Women Building Futures (WBF) was founded in 1998 by a group of City of Edmonton social workers with a simple, but revolutionary, idea: give women who are unemployed, underemployed or stuck in low-paid work a path to economic security through careers in the skilled trades. Since then, our pre-apprenticeship training programs have helped more than 3,000 women transform their lives, while building Alberta’s economy. And we’re just getting started. Our new strategic plan, Build Together 2026-2031 (Build Together), is WBF’s blueprint for getting even more women get ready for the trades and the trades ready for women. Last month, our Journey to Trades students spent the day at Hermitage Park as part of Root for Trees, learning about Edmonton’s ecosystem and the important role we all play in caring for the land. Students explored local tree species, removed invasive plants, planted new trees, and helped clean up the area, making a lasting impact on their community while gaining a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship. Just like the trees they planted, growth starts with a strong foundation. Through Journey to Trades, participants build skills, confidence, and connections that help prepare them for careers in the skilled trades.
